Cotton is the most common fabric used in Ubantu,
produced by vast slave plantation in Mbolu and Newara. Clothbark is stiffer
but waterproof and more expensive. Ceremonial dress is different from national
dress. National dress is functional styles of wraps, clan ceremonial dress
involves leather and beads. In some cases, ceremonial dress is more revealing
than national, as with the conservative Newara styles.
The basic body wrap is a kikoy with black print
only on one side. Worn covering one arm or empress style for women. Kanga
are shawls, worn as extra covering. In Ameru, men and women go bear chested,
with men in sokoto trousers and women in kikoys. In the rainly season,
they wear clothbark shawls. Women wear gold jewelry, vambraces, necklaces
and bracelet, men wear cowerie shell chokers.
In general, women style their hair while men shave
their heads and wear hats. Women also color their hair, using magical replacements
for the traditional red ochre, though dark colors are still standard. Beaded
head bands and forearm bracelets are common to both sexes.
Men and women wear facepaint in ceremonial dress-
geometric designs in black, white and red. Women favor dots, men
do lines.
Facial piercings in Ubantu are often associated
with age grades. Septum, lip disks and ear disks are common.
